Don't leave home without them. In Portland it's quite impossible to be in public and avoid talking to strangers. If solitude is what you seek wear earphones and make a theatrical effort removing them when your attention is inevitably required. Reply with one word only (Mmm. Yeah. Okay.) even if you don't know what they said and replace the earphones immediately. Otherwise you will fall into the customary web of obligatory conversation.

Learned that trick in San Francisco. They usually aren't even plugged in! Good thing apple started making them white so that people can Really know you don't want direct human interaction. Works best with sunglasses.
I have a handy glare just for such ocassions!
