We've been shopping online for a hatchback for a while now. Yesterday we test drove the Toyota Matrix and temporarily pretended like the Prius was an option for us. The only problem with the Prius is that it's in such high demand that Toyota offers no incentives for buying it (0% financing, cash back, etc...). Because of interest the monthly payments would be about $100 more than the other hatchbacks we're looking at. We wish so badly that we could afford what we really believe in - not being so reliant on petrolium and minimizing damage to the ozone and our health. But this morning we're seriously considering the Pontiac Vibe or the Chevy Equinox.
Likely there will be news of a new car before there's news of a new baby! So, I'll keep you posted on this.

Awesome, Grace, I'm so happy to hear that! Love, Mel
Check Carsdirect.com for good info on pricing. we bought our element through them. pretty cool. We've also had a Hyundai that we liked a lot and would put their name in the list of trusted brands.
Then there's the Saturn Sky. For grocery getting and whatnot.
good luck, have fun!
